The Western Cape government could be the first to build a water desalination plant due to increasing drought conditions in the province.
Water engineer expert, Prof Mike Muller, says desalination can work, but raises high cost and reliability concerns.
Desalination is a process that removes minerals from salt water.
If you look at some of countries that have panicked and built desalination plants, by the time the plant was ready the rain had come and there was a plenty of water and have never been switched on since they were built.— Prof Mike Muller, water engineer expert
We should be look at better alternatives. The first one was to simply to put additional capacity to fill up the Voëlvlei Dam outside Cape Town.— Prof Mike Muller, water engineer expert
