Expert: There are already enough laws to regulate social media

How do we define fake news and combat it amid the rise of fake news?

Speaking on Sunday following a press briefing by the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster (JCPS) briefing, Minister David Mahlobo said they are considering regulating social media.

This follows the rise of fake news and what he believes is the peddling of false information.

Mahlobo said the matter would be discussed with various bodies and forums.

Social media expert, Emma Sadlier says Mahlobo may need to switch off social media entirely to stop the circulation of false news on the internet.

He talks about it as if it is a completely unregulated space already. How many laws already exist? Everything from defamation, privacy. We have got the cybercrimes bill coming, hate speech bill coming… this is not an entirely unregulated space.

I think we probably have the capacity to do it but the only way you could legislate against fake news is to turn off social media entirely.
