Is polygamy gaining momentum in parts of South Africa, and more specifically among the young?

Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, Cultural Rights Commission chairman, insists that there is a social revolution that is helping redefine traditional practices.

Mkhwanazi-Xaluva recently commented on a Times Live article profiling the wives of a 50-year-old husband, one of which is a 28-year-old B-Tech management services graduate.

She says there is now a distinction between what is and isn’t harmful traditional practice.

We feel people are becoming more conscious of who they are and where they come from.

I also think people are claiming their agency.

They are beginning to redesign their lives based on how they feel on certain situations instead of an international definition of what a marriage should be.
