Uncertainty over Durban hosting Commonwealth Games in 2022

Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula says Durban may be unable to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games because costs were too high, yet Sascoc (SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee) CEO Tubby Reddy told Reuters the bid committee has met requirements.

The Department of Sport and Recreation director general, Alec Moemi, says South Africa has not reached an agreement with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) regarding the hosting of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Moemi says South Africa is ready to host the games, and the minister of finance has approved the budget of R4.6 billion.

They are doubting the size of the budget we have made available to host the games and the methodology South Africa wants to apply in implementation and hosting of the games.

Alec Moemi, Department of Sport and Recreation director general

We will not take any decisions right now which will have financial implications.

Moemi says they are expecting a decision in two weeks, failing which, the CGF will have find another host.
