Wits African philanthropy course shines light on age old practice of giving

The Wits Business School has introduced a philanthropy course which will focus on the age old practice of gifting in Africa.

Dr Bhekinkosi Moyo, Chairperson of the African Philanthropy Network, has pioneered the Academic Chair in African Philanthropy.

Moyo says the academic centre is an attempt by several researchers and practitioners to make sense of some core African practices.

It aims too at debunking common terminologies like philanthropy in an African context, making it more accessible.

All of us where we come from, we were born and brought up in ways that define philanthropy in its core.

Dr Bhekinkosi Moyo, Chairperson of the African Philanthropy Network

Issues of solidarity, Ubuntu and how communities generally connect with each other that is what is called philanthropy elsewhere in the world.
