South African artist Irma Stern’s “Young Arab” sells for R13.6 million

There’s a renewed interest in Stern worldwide.

All three Sterns sold yesterday was bought by South Africans.

Irma Stern’s “Young Arab” fetched R13.6 million at Strauss & Co’s record-breaking auction.

Stern first exhibited the painting in 1942 when it sold for £40.

In 2015 another Stern painting, “The Arab in Black”, sold for R17.5 million.
