Sluggish growth for SA women in top roles, finds survey

Today is International Women’s Day.

To mark this, the accountancy and auditor firm, Grant Thornton, has released a report on women in business.

According to the survey, less than a third of senior management roles in South Africa belong to women.

The findings claim that women only hold 28% of senior management roles in the country.

While this figure is higher than that of last year, the percentage of women business leaders has not changed significantly since the start of Grant Thornton’s research 13 years ago, when this figure was at 26%.

I wish I could tell you that there were trends. In reality, there's been very little change. In 13 years, we've gone from 26% of senior management held by women in South Africa to 28%.

Lee-Anne Bac, director of Advisory Services at Grant Thornton

Grant Thornton's Lee-Anne Bac say there has been very little change in the gender of business leadership internationally - and not only here at home.

Bac explains that the global average for women in senior management in 25%, making South Africa's 28%, technically, ahead of the curve.

However, she explains that the country's percentage should be sitting closer to 50%, considering the proportion of women that make up the population.

Take a listen to Lee-Anne Bac unpack the report findings:
