The Money Show's Bruce Whitfield interviews Paarman about how she turned her brand into a household name.

My granny wasn’t one of those nurturing, caring grannies. She was a grumpy old girl. But she allowed me to sit in the kitchen. I learned to smell and taste. And that is all you need to understand food.

Ina Paarman

I’m the heart of the business; my son is the head of it.

Ina Paarman

Nobody 'F's with me!

Ina Paarman

In 1982 Ina Paarman started a cookery school in her garage.

She had no marketing budget, but roped in her teenage sons to drop homemade flyers into post-boxes.

The business had a slow start but, after seven years, it was wildly popular.

Paarman teamed up with her husband and son, transforming the business into a fully-fledged food manufacturer.

Today, Paarman Foods - a household name in South Africa – exports to 32 countries around the world.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Paarman for his weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

I started my career as a home economics teacher.

Ina Paarman

I was headhunted by the Technicon where I trained home economic teachers.

Ina Paarman

I love teaching! It’s like gardening with people.

Ina Paarman

My mother told me I’m too clever to work for the government. She gave me R4000 to start a business.

Ina Paarman

We paid our school fees! Our first export order – to Australia – had a yeast infestation. The cost of disposing of that; the loss of face… a whole gedoente!

Ina Paarman

My gut feeling always told me that we’re on the right road.

Ina Paarman

We get offers; but it’s our passion, it’s our life!

Ina Paarman

There’s a fantastic mood in our business. If a big guy buys us; will he look after us? He’s not going to use the best olive oil…
