Today is International Women’s Day.
Since 1908, 8 March has been set aside to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women across the world.
But what is being done to ensure that events such as today and terms such as "women empowerment" are not just platitudes?
Sanitary pad brand Mimi Women has launched a drive to help empower young girls and give vulnerable women employment opportunities.
CEO and founder of Mimi Women, Ramona Kasavan, explains that the Mimi Agent for Change model hopes to see 10 000 indirect sales agent selling their pads to help curb unemployment.
Kasavan is a social entrepreneur and says she feels strongly about changing lives and inspiring girls.
She explains that she resigned from her media career in order to focus her attention on empowering young girls through the Mimi brand.
According to Kasavan, Mimi Women started as a non-profit organisation, relying on the investment from a handful of corporate companies.

Mimi has already distributed more than 800 000 sanitary pads across South Africa and three other African countries.
Previously known as Happy Days, it is South Africa’s first and only black female-owned sanitary pads company and the country’s leading sanitary pads drive.
