Prasa board fired, future uncertain for Hawks probe into money trail

Transport Minister Dipuo Peters has dissolved the Prasa board amid reports of infighting at the parastatal.

Members of the board and the Transport Department have been briefing Parliament's transport portfolio committee for the past two days.

Investigative reporter Pieter-Louis Myburgh says alleged salary hikes and irregularities within the board have led to the decision taken by Peters.

This comes after former acting CEO of Prasa Collins Letsoalo hit back at the parastatal’s board over claims he demanded a 350% raise.

Former acting CEO of Prasa Collins Letsoalo has hit back at the parastatal’s board over claims he demanded a 350% raise.

However, Myburgh believes that Letsoalo's sacking is a minor issue in comparison to other irregular expenditure claims.

The Letsoalo matter has become a little bit of a side issue that has been blown out of proportion.

According to Myburgh, the greater concern should be the probe into alleged corrupt dealings involving the ANC, sacked Lucky Montana, locomotives supplier Swifambo Rail Leasing and contractor Siyangena Technologies.

It's clear from what is playing out in the background is that there has been some progress on the investigations into the multi-billion rand expenditures that occurred before these other issues came to the fore.

He explains that the question is now whether the Hawks investigations will be delayed by the dissolution of the Prasa board.
