Transport Minister is protecting someone by dissolving Prasa board: Popo Molefe

The board of Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) was dissolved in Parliament on Wednesday following directives by Transport Minister Dipou Peters.

Dr Popo Molefe, dismissed the Chairperson of the PRASA Board and confirmed that he received a letter on Wednesday from the Minister, informing him that he is no longer Chairman of the Prasa board.

Stating the reasons of his dismissal, Molefe says:

She has been saying because there has been a public spat between the board and her secondee Mr Letsoalo and she says she is acting in order to restore good corporate governance. Obviously that's neither here nor there... she is saying nothing.

For me, the Minister is been wanting us to stop the investigations on a very important matter in this country, on a wide range of corruption that has taken place inside Prasa. We have refused to stop the investigations.

Molefe says the dissolution of the board is the easiest way for the Minister to reach her objective of stopping the corruption investigations.

He says the investigations involves R24 billion of irregular expenditure and tenders which were awarded irregularly.

They are clearly protecting someone. Firstly the people who are involved in this corruption.
