Eskom kicks off renewable energy process

Eskom says it has already started a process of shutting down units at it’s Komati Power Station, in its move to reduce greenhouse carbon emissions through renewable energy.

Four coal powered stations will be closed in Mpumalanga.

These stations are the 3 000MW Kriel, 1 000 MW Komati, 2 000 MW Hendrina and the 1 600 MW Camden power station.

Some of the units are coming to an end of their lives within the next 15 years or so once you switch them off you need to replace them.

Khulu Phasiwe, Eskom spokesperson

You need to have something which has base load capacity to make sure that you always have electricity.

Khulu Phasiwe, Eskom spokesperson

In the interim we are replacing some of the base load capacity by renewable energy.
