More Cape women opening homes to Airbnb, hotel occupancy slows

Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (FEDHASA) CEO, Tshifhiwa Tshivengwa, says the increasing number of South Africans involved in Airbnb has started affecting hotel business.

A study has shown that there is a huge growth in the number of SA women opening their homes to an online marketplace and hospitality service.

In areas like Cape Town we have seen that some hotels that were fully booked over the past years during December period, had rooms available. The effect of Airbnb is starting to be visible in our industry.

Tshivengwa says B & B's do not follow the same rules as hotels.

There are several legislation that we have to abide by in South Africa... We also have to be registered as a business, and most of the guys that are operating B & B's don't follow those rules. It's someone who is putting their home for a short term rental without following the rules.

Tshifhiwa Tshivengwa, FEDHASA CEO

All we are asking for is that we should all follow the same rules that are established.
