[WATCH] 2017 Cape Town Cycle Tour cancelled due to high winds

2017 Cape Town Cycle Tour cancelled under severe windy conditions. Organisers are requesting cyclists not to approach the starting line.

On Saturday race organisers sent out a message warning inexperienced cyclists of excessive winds but now have cancelled the entire event.

There have also been devastating fires in the Hout Bay area adjacent to the cycle route over the weekend with hundreds of displaced residents from Imizamo Yethu left homeless.

The route was also shortened due to protests.

'Due to protest action unrelated to the Cape Town Cycle Tour and damage to the road surface on the route, the 2017 Cycle Tour will be diverted at Glencairn Expressway. Participants will be redirected over Glencairn Hill to Sun Valley and on to Chapman’s Peak.' announced organisers before the race was cancelled due to winds.

This would have decreased the route from 109km to approximately 78km.

One cyclist said there were crashes as they were trying to set off due to winds.
