Codesa, success or failure?

Listeners called into the Open Line on The Eusebius McKaiser Show to discuss some controversial decisions made decades ago at the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (Codesa)

Caller, Maxwell insists that it is time to reflect on past negotiations and some of the promises the ruling party has failed to fulfill post 1991 and 1994.

He questions whether Codesa was at all progressive.

I do understand the ANC went through some type of change and perhaps with their philosophical outlook…but a lot of promises were made to our people.

Maxwell, caller

All of these problems we are facing, it seems systemic, are coming from far behind and I think maybe we should get clarity on what exactly transpired through those Codesa meetings and what exactly was negotiated.

Maxwell, caller

Presenter Eusebius McKaiser admits negotiations were not 'perfect', but the main 'win' was established through the Constitution.

He does, however, question whether we have made strides in achieving the vision set out for South Africa.

I think if we want to understand the material inequities of 2017, I am afraid the main story of lost opportunities, of looting, of kleptocratic relationships between some civil servants and big business… that is the story of men and women and what they did and did not do after 1994.
