Mogoeng orders Sassa and Bathabile Dlamini to explain missing Monday deadline

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has confirmed that Treasury is currently considering an application from the Social Development Department for a deviation from standard tender process.

Gordhan is answering questions regarding social grants payments before Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa).

He says he is certain that the country will find a way to make sure that grants will be paid on 1 April.

He is very clear that the Constitutional Court will direct what happens going forward.

Lindsay Dentlinger, EWN reporter

Gordhan says his department cannot be involved in choice of a service provider to deliver social grants.

There has been controversy around the payment of social grants as the South Africa Social Security Agency (Sassa) wants to sign a new contract with Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) despite previous Constitutional Court ruling that contract is invalid and unconstitutional.

Meanwhile Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has asked former and current Sassa CEOs and Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini to file affidavits and explain why directions issued by Mogoeng were not complied with.

They have until 3pm to explain why they missed Mogoeng's 4pm Monday deadline to explain the issues around social grants payments.
