Durban loses on 2022 Commonwealth Games

It was confirmed on Monday that South Africa will not be hosting the 2022 Commonwealth games because the South African government couldn't provide financial guarantees.

EWN sports reporter, Jean Smythe says during a press conference in Durban Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said he was disappointed at having to make this announcement and expressed gratitude to the government of South Africa.

He says Treasury was willing to commit R4.32 billion but the quoted amount was R2 billion higher than that.

Smythe says the Commonwealth Federation pointed out a few things that led to South Africa been stripped as the host.

Among these was the fact that the organising committee had still not been elected. The agreement was that the committee should be elected 6 months after the announcement.

Another factor was that the stadiums had not passed the risk assessment, according to the federation.
