I don't feel like I'm still my mothers little girl - human trafficking survivor

14 March 2017 2:54 PM

A 17-year-old human trafficking victim says her life will never be the same after she was forced into prostitution two years ago.

Human trafficking victims are often lured with the promise of jobs.

Recently, the Hawks in KZN rescued 72 human trafficking victims, brought from Lesotho and Swaziland to South Africa often ending up in labour exploitation or worse.

Stop Trafficking of People is a registered non-profit Christian organisation that exists to combat all aspects of human trafficking within South Africa and the rest of Africa.

The organisation focuses on awareness, advocacy, and victim assistance.

For so long it's been a hidden crime.

Nicole Bartels – Media and operations coordinator for stop trafficking of people

Nicole Bartels, Media and operations coordinator for Stop Trafficking of People, says South Africa is classified as an origin, transit and destination point for human trafficking.

Bartels says various forms of human trafficking are prevalent in South Africa such as labour and organ harvesting traffic.

One of the many things the organisation raises in their awareness campaigns is that the exploitation of vulnerability is another way of explaining human trafficking.
