There is a crisis at Sassa if a decision is not made today: Pierre de Vos

Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini on Tuesday blamed opposition parties for deepening the situation with regards to grant payment uncertainty and denied there is a crisis.

Opposition parties have called for the Minister to resign or be fired.

CEO of Net1, Serge Belamant told the National Assembly that if the contract is not finalised by Wednesday he doesn't guarantee that grants will be paid on April 1.

Prof Pierre de Vos, Claude Leon Foundation Chair in Constitutional Governance at the University of Cape Town says this is a crisis if there is no decision by the end of today, grants won't be paid.

The only way to fix this was always going to be through the Constitutional Court which Sassa for some reason resisted.

EWN Reporter, Gia Nicolaides says Belamant is trying to send a warning to Sassa to get their ducks in a row. She says the Post Office has been saying they can manage payments but Sassa and CPS have been saying, in terms of logistics, no one can do it.

It needs to established if the contract with CPS will be extended and for how long, says Niccolaides. It seems the contract could be longer that six months because its a bit of a complicated procedure for Sassa to be ready to take over the payment system.
