ANC-AIC's 31 March Matatiele demarcation deadline looms

The African Independent Congress (AIC) says the African National Congress (ANC) postponed the meeting to discuss the Matatiele demarcation agreement.

The meeting was scheduled to take place on Wednesday.

AIC President Mandla Galo says the leader representing the ANC in negotiations, Jeff Radebe, pleaded with the party to postpone the meeting as he had to attend a ministerial task team meeting to resolve the social grants crisis.

We felt this Sassa thing is a matter of great concern, so we allowed the meeting to be shifted to Saturday, that is the 18th of this month.

Mandla Galo, AIC President

The ANC went into a coalition with AIC after it failed to win an outright majority in Ekurhuleni and Rustenburg in last year’s local government elections.

In exchange, the AIC wanted Matatiele to be incorporated back into KwaZulu-Natal.

Galo says there needs to be a signed memorandum of understanding between the two parties by the 31st of March.

If they are committing in terms of coming up with time frames as to when the legislative processes will kick in and have sent us their timelines.... on Saturday we will be signing a memorandum of understanding including time frames.

Mandla Galo, AIC President
