ANC top six orders Andile Lungisa to resign

Even after the endorsement by President Jacob Zuma, Andile Lungisa has been ordered to step down by the African Nation Congress' (ANC) top six.

Lungisa was appointed ANC Nelson Mandela Bay chairperson recently.

The party's top six has ordered that Lungisa returns to his position as a member of the ANC's provincial executive committee in the Eastern Cape.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe had previously said Lungisa should not to run for the position of chairperson.

EWN Reporter Stephen Grootes, says the rule Lungisa is accused of breaking is running for office of a lower body when he is part of a superior body.

Grootes also says this indicates the top six of the ANC is split down the middle.

There has been a change in the balance of power within the top six.

Lungisa faces a criminal charge at the moment because of a violent conflict in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality chambers.

That altercation ended with the security guard firing his gun through the roof of the chambers.

Grootes adds that the ANC stipulates that if you are facing a criminal charge you cannot run for office.
