Professor Mary Metcalfe says they were not able to proceed with the Higher Education National Convention after students dressed in Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) regalia disrupted proceedings on Saturday.
Students did not want Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande to speak and demanded AfriForum to leave the forum.
The convention held in Midrand was meant to provide a space for stakeholders to find a resolution on issues facing higher education, including students' inability to pay fees and systematic challenges.
It was evidence of higher level of intolerance in higher education sector, which symptomatic of the levels of intolerance and predisposition lapsing into violence when people are frustrated.— Professor Mary Metcalfe, Higher Education National Convention convener
Metcalfe explains that there were students who traveled by buses from other provinces to attend the convention.
