UCKAR VC: Name change must be done democratically

University Currently Known As Rhodes Vice Chancellor Dr Sizwe Mabizela says the university has organised a summit to discuss transformation and future of the name of the institution.

He says it is important that this happens within the context of financial sustainability.

The question of the future of the name of our university is an important matter and it should be resolved through an inclusive, democratic, consultative and participatory process. And that process should include all the stakeholders.

Dr Sizwe Mabizela, University Currently Known As Rhodes Vice Chancellor

It's a very complex matter. It's not something that can be decided on a spur of a moment.

Dr Sizwe Mabizela, University Currently Known As Rhodes Vice Chancellor

Calls to change the name of the University Known As Rhodes became more popular in 2015 after University of Cape Town students called for the removal of the statue of Cecil John Rhodes from campus.

Mabizela says the institution needs to make sure changing name does not result in any decrease in the quality of the university's standards.

We must have a financial sustainable institution after that process, because we can give this institution the best name under the sun, if it is not financially sustainable we will just have to shut the doors.

Dr Sizwe Mabizela, University Currently Known As Rhodes Vice Chancellor

Whatever we do to our transformation engagements, we must make sure that we do not end up with an institution that is a shadow of its once powerful and respected self.

Dr Sizwe Mabizela, University Currently Known As Rhodes Vice Chancellor

We must make sure that whatever we do we enhance the academic standing of this institution. We must make sure we continually improve the intellectual project of this institution.
