The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) staged marches across the country today over the rights of vulnerable workers.
The trade union federation marched on the offices of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), calling for the commission to take action against human rights violations of workers.
Cosatu's Sizwe Pamla explains that the SAHRC has failed to act after Cosatu handed over a dossier containing cases showing how the rights of farm workers and domestic workers are violated.
The level of exploitation and violence directed at people who do domestic work is shocking. Some of these people are treated as glorified slaves.— Sizwe Pamla, Cosatu National Spokesperson
Pamla advises that the commission has not responded to their cases or confirmed that they are investigating the violations.
He says that the some labour sectors are poorly organised by unions, making workers increasingly vulnerable;e to exploitation.
