'People think they are above the law'

Trade union Nehawu says it gave the government ample time to implement a contingency plan before a strike by social workers in Gauteng could occur.

The union has been criticised this week after The Gauteng Social Development Department confirmed the death of six-month-old baby girl who was transferred from a government facility on Friday.

The baby died on Tuesday and the cause is still unknown.

She and her siblings were moved from the Walter Sisulu Child and Youth Care Centre in Soweto after a section of the facility was torched, allegedly by striking social workers.

The union has refused to take sole responsibility for her death and says the provincial social development department is responsible for contingency measures.

Callers have been outraged by the news and say children are being made to suffer.

Some of these unions are so irresponsible. This is an essential service and then they are pushing the blame on the employer and even if the employer hires scarce labor they will intimidate those people. People think they are above the law in this country.

A friend of ours is actually a social worker in Edenvale but she works for an NGO, and she says their NGO has said that they cannot set foot on Don Mattera which is a child youth care center in Edenvale because their safety isn't guaranteed so there is literally three people running a center that caters for 70 children.
