Agreement reached between Mayor and Imizamo Yethu residents on super-blocking

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille visited the community of Imizamo Yethu, in Hout bay which was damaged raving fires.

Mayor de Lille has appealed and reached an agreement with the community.

She has urged residents to do a re-blocking which will allow fire emergency services to move in the area with ease especially in the case of emergencies.

The Mayor says the amount of money spent on the fire relief could have gone towards building houses. She also says they have an interdict as a fall back position should the agreement be broken.

I'm holding my fingers crossed that the agreement will hold. We have an interdict as a fallback position but don't think we will be using that.

Patricia de Lille, Cape Town Mayor

She says they have begun breaking down structures gradually.

The Mayor says the community of Imizamo Yethu has received a lot of in rebuilding the damaged structures and should be able to see a difference in the next few days. She adds some people will have to be displaced and moved to neighbouring areas.

There are two parts there. Its nine hundred opportunities about half of that will be duplexes.

Patricia de Lille, Cape Town Mayor

De Lille says they have asked the community to give the City the plot to build the single houses, to go up in density, possibly four to five story's to accommodate more people.

She will return to the community in a week's time with cost estimates of the rebuilding project.
