Opinion: Social housing in Sea Point won't collapse your world! - John Maytham

As the City of Cape Town approves the sale of the controversial Tafelberg site in Sea Point, John expresses his outrage at the way locals in the area abhor the idea of 'affordable housing' anywhere near them.

People have the idea in their minds that RDP houses are going to be put up in these places and shock, horror is the view of some. I don't understand the shock, horror - but it is affordable housing.

John Maytham, CapeTalk host

He points at that social housing is attractive low cost housing for the very people that work for those who are up in arms at the prospect.

The thing that gets me you know, is the kind of people that are complaining about the fact that Sea Point would 'go to the dogs' if affordable housing was built...these are the very people who look after your kids!

John Maytham

This is the auntie that puts your kid in a pram and takes her down to the Sea Point promenade and pushes her up and down and sings to her...These are the people who bring you your food in the restaurants you go to. And you quite happy for that to happen, but live next to you! Oh no the world will collapse!

Take a listen to John's strong views below:
