Are serial rapists targeting Joburg taxi commuters?

Gauteng police say they are investigating several rape cases involving two Quantum minibuses frequenting Soweto and Roodepoort.

On Thursday, Eyewitness News revealed the account of a Johannesburg woman who says she was raped at gunpoint in the back of a taxi in front of her 10-year-old son when she boarded the vehicle on Ontdekkers Road on Sunday.

Three men in the taxi also forced her to hand over her ATM card and PIN number and withdrew money from her account several times.

Many people have come forward to relay similar incidents involving a white and grey Toyota Quantum.

My niece was on her way to work and she was dropped somewhere with a taxi to take a connecting taxi and met with these boys who drive a quantum. They took her, her card, went to draw money but she didn't have money, After that they raped her and dropped her somewhere in Soweto.

A white Quantum and a grey Quantum using the same method. They take your phone, take out your sim cards and continue with you. If you have money they will drive around with you the whole day. What they did with this woman is what they did with this little girl. Its not Soweto alone, its Roodepoort, Soweto and Johannesburg, its the same car.

Xolani Gwala says he has received a text mentioning a vehicle in Soweto driven by men who are believed to have raped at least nine women in the area this week.

I have this message from King Mali who said to me nine women raped in one day by men in a white Toyota Quantum operating around Soweto.

The police's Lungelo Dlamini says several cases are being investigated involving the vehicles and police have yet to make any breakthroughs.

These two vehicles, the white quantum and grey quantum, there have been incidents where the victims have been robbed and raped. They stop as normal taxis where members board the taxis. Inside the taxis you find that there are only men and no women.
