The fire detection devices that saved many houses in Imizamo Yethu blaze

Lumkani uses modern technology to detect and decrease the risk of devastating fires in informal settlements.

David Gluckman, Founder Lumkani Fire Detection, says the devices were installed in about 250 houses in the D-Section of the Imizamo Yethu informal settlement.

Two weeks ago, 15 000 people were left without homes after a massive fire ravaged 3000 homes in the area.

Gluckman says out of 250 houses that they've installed fire detection devices, only 10 were affected by this massive fire.

This is a very complex matter and we are very conscious of claiming victory.

David Gluckman, Founder Lumkani Fire Detection

We do know from speaking to our clients that the alarm rang and they were able to rally and safeguard houses. That's one of the steps that prevented the spread of fires.
