Negotiations hope to end Nehawu nationwide strike

The National Education Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) members are still on a nationwide strike demanding rural allowance, the absorption of unemployed social workers on a permanent basis.

Improved conditions of service for all employees in the department is also a union demand.

Mbangwa Xaba, Spokesperson for Gauteng's Department of Social Development says he hopes both the government and the unions will heed the plea by the Minister and end the Nationwide strike by social development workers.

He says government has made an offer and is in consultation with the union about reaching an agreement.

As we mourn the passing of the little one perhaps it is time that we lower our tempers and remember that we care for the vulnerable.

With regards to the death of a six month old baby, Xaba says we should wait for an autopsy which will conclude the cause of death.

The baby died while being transferred from a government facility on Friday.

The fact that the strike is taking place in the manner that it does. Which is extremely violent and there is a large amount of intimidation. Where children are prevented from supplies that lays a burden on our ability to provide basic care.
