Higher Education confident new funding model will support students

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) says a new funding model is needed at universities to help poor students and those from the so-called missing middle.

The department made submissions at Fees Commission, EWN's Thando Khubeka reports.

The DHET and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) had previously appeared before the commission and presented the Ikusasa Financial Aid Scheme blue print model, explains Khubeka.

The department believes that once the Ikusasa model - which is expected to come into effect next year - is implemented, it will be the answer to addressing the current funding crisis.

They say they are currently testing this model on certain aspects, particularly on how it will fund the missing middle.
