State should provide accommodation for evicted employers - lawyer

Thulani Nkosi, Senior Attorney, Socio-Economic Rights Institute, says private land owners do not have the obligation to provide people with housing.

He says if a landlord evicts an individual, the municipality should be alerted and find alternative accommodation for that person.

He says the city may be ordered by the courts to find alternative accommodation even though the process may take some time.

He adds that in instances of delayed alternative accommodation by the city, the landowners will then request rent from the city to keep the tenants housed.
