Go Vino growing appetites for great wine in Zambia

Trudie and Ignus van Rooyen, the co-founders of Go Vino, say the appetite in Zambia has grown since they introduced it.

People who have not grown up with wine have not always had the terminology and understanding but once they taste it they love it.

The couple started by visiting the First Lusaka Wine show. After some discussions with the wine farm owners, it became clear that they were in need of an agent in Zambia. The rest, as they say, is history

Go Vino supplies a number of hotels with wine including Radisson Blu Hotel, Southern Sun and the Best Western.

Initially we focused on the hospitality industry; we started working hard in the restaurants and hotels. We have recently listed with Pick n Pay Zambia and we are talking to Shporite. It’s amazing… the moment you list with retailers you are taking national.

The advice they give to South Africans wanting to do business in Zambia is:

  1. Do your homework and ensure you have all and the correct permits and business registrations.
  2. Work hard, it is always harder work in a foreign country than it is at home (no support structure)
  3. Make good friends (not always expats) since they become the support structure of your family that you will need.
