The lifelong complexities of being adopted

Being an adoptive child is something individuals have to navigate throughout their lives, explains clinical psychologist Zamo Mbele.

Mbele spoke about what happens to adoptive children and how the experience manifests itself during their journey.

It's something that's ever-present, all the way from age 0 through to when they are grandparents.

Mbele explains that there are complex variations of adoption in South Africa and different motivations.

He says often the emphasis is placed on the role of adoptive parents, while the focus should also turn to the well-being of the child.

What must not be missed is what the adoptive child (and eventually adult) will gain.
