Oxfam’s Thembinkosi Dlamini says the organised nature of illegal mining has led to an exorbitant number of people becoming involved.
At least 6000 people are currently believed to be operating in Gauteng.
Dlamini says it is difficult to estimate how much is being made in the process, but retailers are benefiting from the illegal activity.
We do believe that the main beneficiaries are the formal gold, diamond retailers who have means of accessing these materials from the miners at a lesser cost than it would cost in the normal market.— Thembinkosi Dlamini, Senior Extractives Lead at Oxfam
They have an interest in keeping this activity illegal obviously because they don’t have to bear significant risks and costs of mining.— Thembinkosi Dlamini, Senior Extractives Lead at Oxfam
