The Department of Basic Education is looking to review the national school curriculum. This could result in the works of William Shakespeare receiving less emphasis.
Allan Subban, Director for Learner and Teacher Support Material, at the Department of Basic Education, says the department has implemented the Curriculum and Assessment Policy statement (Caps) since 2012. This involves a move from the Outcome Based Education (OBE) structured curriculum.
He says with the implementation of Caps the department has been introducing new textbooks into the system.
The department has requested submissions from publishers where selected books will be screened and included in the curriculum.
The submissions are made in different categories. Firstly they submit for different grades and in each of those grades there are different levels such home language, first additional language, and second additional language.
