San will now approve research into own communities

Leana Snyders, Director of the South African San Council, says much research has been done about the San people over many years. Snyders says this ethics code will allow researchers to abide by guidelines set by the San communities.

She says San communities have in the past been disrespected by researchers.

The code will be led by traditional leaders of the !Xun, Khwe and !Khomani groups, representing at least 8000 people.

The leaders want researchers to submit their proposals to a review panel of community members in order to be approved.

Snyders says they have found researchers enrich themselves of the knowledge and culture of the San without acknowledging or giving back to the communities.

People need to give back to our community and not just take information.

Snyders says she also hopes the ethics code will ensure factual reporting of the San communities.
