Mandela, Motlanthe, Randera remember 'Uncle Kathy' an activist 'til the end

Tributes are pouring in for one of South Africa's struggle stalwarts, Ahmed Kathrada. Kathrada died at the Donald Gordon Medical Centre on Tuesday when his health deteriorated after he contracted pneumonia after undergoing brain surgery to remove a blood clot.

Former President and Robben Island prisoner, Kgalema Motlanthe, recalls that Kathrada served as a librarian when they were in prison during apartheid.

Motlanthe says Kathrada was a forthright and honest person who also understood the right of others to hold a different view.

It's sad that we lose such a giant of the struggle for liberation in South Africa, a morally forthright person who always expressed his honest view on any matter on the discussion.

Kgalema Motlanthe, former President

Dr Fazel Randera, the struggle doctor who saved lives during apartheid, sends his condolences to Kathrada's wife, Barbara Hogan and family.

My last recollection of uncle Kathy was when we had one of the early meetings of stalwarts and veterans.... Throughout that meeting he sat quietly and listened. Although we knew he was a giant among us, he didn't feel that he needed to speak, but his presence to us was an important event that morning.

Dr Fazel Randera, struggle doctor

An activist right to the end. We have lost a great person. South Africa has been blessed by dignified and nobble leaders. Uncle Kathy was one of those, and may are passing on quite sadly.

Listen to Chief Mandla Mandela below remember fondly how Kathrada teased him as a child...
