Analysis: 'Weak' political parties with strong leaders

Political analysts Prince Mashele and Professor Somadoda Fikeni interrogate why some Members of Parliament with strong and promising political careers don't necessarily belong to an equally strong political party.

Some of these individuals include Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) chairperson Themba Godi, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) MP's, Mkhuleko Hlengwa and Liesl van der Merwe, United Democratic Movement (UDM) president, Bantu Holomisa as well as MP, Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, also of the UDM.

Mashele says the one politician that has stood out for him is United Democratic Movement (UDM) president, Bantu Holomisa, adding that he has performed a sterling job over the years.

In terms of his presentation in Parliament, in terms of being on the right side of the national mood, in terms of commitment to taking on the executive.

Prince Mashele, Political analysts

Mashele adds that Holomisa is one of the best politicians South Africa has, despite the performance of his party. Commenting on Kwankwa, Mashele says he is an exemplary, unmatched politician.

Speaking on the decline of the IFP, Fikeni says the party failed to come up with a new ideology that would capture the imagination on a national scale.

The IFP footprint beyond KZN was mainly around the hostels, where again it was following the migrant workers, so they ought to have worked beyond that particular footprint, expand themselves in areas.

Professor Somadoda Fikeni, Political analyst

The analysts also added that the rise of ANC Zulu leaders in KZN weakened the IFP.

Fikeni and Mashele also weigh in on the careers of Congress of the People (Cope) leader Mosiuoa Lekota and Mmusi Maimane, Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA).
