Cape Town water safe to drink says municipality

Councilor Xanthea Limberg says Cape Town water is safe to drink.

The City is currently experiencing high levels of geosmin in the water drawn from its Theewaterskloof Dam.

Limberg explains that the naturally occurring organic compound is not harmful.

The City is currently increasing powdered activated carbon dosing during the water treatment process in an attempt to deal with geosmin.

Limberg says the taste and smell of the water will normalise over time.

It does occur from time to time in our ground water resources.

Xanthea Limberg, Councillor at City of Cape Town

It is not harmful at all, the city is currently treating the water and so slowly that quality in terms of the taste and the smell will slowly disappear but it is in no way harmful to our residents.

Xanthea Limberg, Councillor at City of Cape Town

With declining dam levels water quality may become an issue but it is also not a risk at all because through our lab we test our water on a weekly basis.
