[WATCH] Motlanthe ovation as he quotes Kathrada's call for Zuma to step down

As part of his eulogy, former president Kgalema Motlanthe read from a letter Kathrada wrote to President Jacob Zuma last year.

Struggle icon Ahmed Kathrada will be laid to rest at the Westpark cemetery in Johannesburg.

The dignitaries attending the funeral include Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, former president Thabo Mbeki, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, former president Kgalema Motlanthe and one of the two last Rivonia trialists Andrew Mlangeni.

While presenting the eulogy, Motlanthe read from the letter Kathrada wrote to President Zuma last year.

EWN reporter, Ziyanda Ngcobo says there was a standing ovation for Motlanthe in response to the reading of the letter especially when Mothlante read the quote where Kathrada asked Zuma to step down.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and Gwede Mantashe did not stand up.

SACP's Blade Nzimande lamented the timing of the passing of Kathrada saying he died while the country needs wisdom.

President Jacob Zuma was asked by the family not to speak at the funeral and the Presidency on Wednesday issued a statement that the President would not be attending the funeral.

Prof Somadoda Fikeni commented that there is no denying the fact that Kathrada was an iconic figure and now that he his gone perhaps his voice will sound louder.
