Opinion: Rejecting Zuma at Kathrada funeral an ultimate dis

30 March 2017 10:44 AM
Eusebius McKaiser reflects on the events that unfolded at the Kathrada funeral on Wednesday and Zuma's exclusion.

President Jacob Zuma did not attend the funeral of African National Congress (ANC) and struggle veteran, Ahmed Kathrada.

The family asked the President not to attend the funeral and memorial service which took place at Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

ANC senior members who attended the funeral included secretary general, Gwede Mantashe, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, former Presidents Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Montlhante.

Eusebius McKaiser describes asking Zuma not to attend as an "ultimate dis".

There are something like 56 million South Africans, and only one person is expressly asked not to attend funeral of the icon.

A black man who fought in the struggle, State President, is the one person out of 56 million South Africans who are asked by Kathrada family not to come to the funeral.

Eusebius McKaiser

If that is not the ultimate dis, then I don't what it is. Then there are still ANC leaders who prop up this person who is not even allowed to make an appearance at the funeral.
