"Mbete has missed an historic opportunity"
Political analyst Prince Mashele says Parliamentary Speaker Baleka Mbete has 'squandered' any presidential ambitions. He says her response to a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma should serve as an opportunity to 'save her credibility'.
Mbete addressed the media on Sunday at OR Tambo International Airport after cutting short her trip to Bangladesh.
She said she will begin a process of consultation on the motion of no confidence in Zuma, following mounting calls from opposition parties who want him to step down.
There are three critical arms of the state, most agree that the judiciary is still intact, the second arm is the executive - all people know that the executive has collapsed.Prince Mashele, Political Analyst
The third arm of the state is Parliament.... all eyes of South African's are looking upon that arm as to what is going to happen following Zuma's madness.Prince Mashele, Political Analyst
If Baleka had something in her head I think she would see the historic moment and say as the Speaker of the National Assembly, I understand that the national mood has been bruised, all I will do is to convince Parliament on an emergency basis to deal with the situation.Prince Mashele, Political Analyst
If she did that I think she would rescue what ever little of credibility that remains in her.Prince Mashele, Political Analyst
