Over the weekend, Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba declared that churches operating illegally within the city, particularly in areas like Orange Grove, Norwood, and Yeoville, would be closed down.
Mashaba says churches are expected to be exemplary in the community and not disruptive. He says churches that have no respect for communities they operate in will be closed down.
As the city of Joburg we have taken a decision to root out this kind of criminality in our communities.— Herman Mashaba, Joburg Mayor
Residents have reportedly complained about noise levels and Mashaba says this is a kind of criminality.
If you don't respect the rights of residents, you break the law. The church should know our community deserves to sleep and our school children deserve to the right to study and not be disrupted by churches.— Herman Mashaba, Joburg Mayor
Mashaba says it seems some of these churches are open for commercial reasons and that will not happen under his watch.
