Make Money Mondays

Elvis Blue opens up about money

I played my guitar [busking] at Rosebank. I earned so much money!

Elvis Blue

The best money decision I’ve ever made was to split the R500 000 I won at Idols with Lloyd Cele. A deal is a deal!

Elvis Blue

The worst money decision I’ve ever made was starting a handbag business with my wife.

Every week The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviews a famous person about her or his attitude to money (hopes and fears, successes and failures, etc.) as part of his weekly “Make Money Mondays” feature.

This week Arabile Gumede (in for Whitfield) interviewed Elvis Blue.

Blue – with three platinum and two gold albums - is one of South Africa’s most commercially successful artists.

He shot to fame in 2010 when he won M-Net’s Idols, and unselfishly shared half his winnings with runner-up Lloyd Cele.

Blue created an initiative called “The Cookiejar” that enables people who attend his shows to give directly to specific projects by simply dropping their change in a cookie jar.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

Everything I own is in South Africa. It’s very heavy.

Elvis Blue

My parents were together [when dealing with money].

Elvis Blue

My dad – even if he had R2 in his wallet – he would know about it.

Elvis Blue

Compared to others at my school we didn’t have a lot of money.

Elvis Blue

I was a terrible waiter! I got demoted to being a clown.

Elvis Blue

My first investment was a retirement annuity and an investment to prepare for my daughter’s studies.

Elvis Blue

I had my first bank account when I was 15 years old in boarding school in Potchefstroom.

Elvis Blue

I’ve never really done everything else other than music.

Elvis Blue

My parents were always supportive.

Elvis Blue

Giving that money away bought us so much press! It was worth much more than R250 000! It was in the millions.
