Opinion: Sir may I say to you there is a leadership crisis now!

John Maytham responds to Zuma saying he was right to introduce younger blood into Cabinet to prevent a future leadership crisis.

Sir may I say to you there is a leadership crisis now!

John Maytham, Cape Talk host

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the African National Congress (ANC) stalwarts are the latest group to make their call for President Jacob Zuma to resign.

Cosatu made the call shortly before midday on Tuesday, in the wake of S&P's downgrade of South Africa to junk status.

Citing mounting calls for his removal as well as a proposed motion of no confidence, John Maytham says the ANC National Executive Committee is effectively the only body that has the power to see it through.

He, however, doubts that this will happen.

On the basis of the fact that there are maybe 60 people out of the NEC that are keeping him in power, think of the hundreds of thousands, millions of people who want Jacob Zuma out of power.

John Maytham, Cape Talk host

What is keeping him in power is a majority, slender majority but a majority to which he thinks he can lie.

60 to 63 South Africans are keeping Jacob Zuma in power. How do we change their minds?
