The sub-2 hour marathon and why Nike’s bid may be too ambitious

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge is one of three elite runners chosen to attempt to run a 42.195 km distance in under two hours.

The sub-2 hour marathon organized by American sportswear giant Nike has been received with skepticism. Some have called it an audacious bid.

Kipchoge, a former world 5 000m champion, ran the world's third fastest marathon time of 2:03.05 during the London marathon in April 2016.

He will run alongside the likes of Boston marathon winner Lelisa Desisa and veteran Eritrean distance runner Zersenay Tadese.

Sports Scientist Dr Ross Tucker weighed in on the matter.

To me the training won’t make a difference because these athletes are already so well prepared and so well trained, they are right at the limit of what they can tolerate and there is so much wisdom among Kenyan runners about how to prepare for a marathon so I don’t see that providing a huge advantage.

Dr Ross Tucker, Sports Scientist

Nike have released the shoe that these athletes will use and they are making some pretty extravagant claims about how beneficial that shoe is, those claims have yet to be proven.
