'Mantashe, Ramaphosa, Mkhize were testing waters by speaking against President'

Political analyst, Ralph Mathekga, says the top six African National Congress (ANC) leaders who spoke against the Cabinet reshuffle hoped that their public utterances will open a space for people to defend and entertain their ideas.

ANC secretary general, Gwede Mantashe, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Treasury Zweli Mkhize criticised President Jacob Zuma for axing Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas.

Mathekga says the three leaders knew they do not have support within the national working committee and national executive committee.

He acknowledges that the three have been humiliated in the National Working Committee.

Opposing Jacob Zuma in the ANC is a challenge he says.

That space just does not exist within the ANC.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

Why did these members of the top six speak out, knowing they would not succeed?

It is testing the waters.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

What is so different now is the willingness for people to raise their hands and identified within a particular group.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

This is another victory for Jacob Zuma.... I think odds are stuck in his favor going to the 2017 elective conference.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

It will be by some form of miracle that he could be lost. So far he consolidated very well.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

Mathekga says change needs to come from outside of ANC structures.
