Victorious Zuma no confidence vote? Fat chance, says Melanie Verwoerd

5 April 2017 2:28 PM

Political analyst Melanie Verwoerd says the odds are stacked against winning the no confidence vote - which may make things worse.

Expectations that the ANC's top six recall President Jacob Zuma have been squashed, after the party briefed media on Wednesday following the ANC NWC meeting.

South Africans now await the verdict on whether National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete will go ahead with the motion of no confidence table by opposition parties.

However, former ANC member of Parliament (MP) Melanie Verwoerd says there are serious implications for both a successful and failed vote of no confidence.

She explains that it is highly unlikely that the vote will pass as it would require at least a third of ANC's Parliamentary caucus to vote with the opposition.

They'll need more than 50 votes. I think to be safe, they'd need about 60 to 70 votes...

We're talking about a very significant chunk [of votes]. I certainly think that's not going to happen at all, especially after what Gwede Mantashe said this morning.

Verwoerd says on the odd chance that the no-confidence succeeds, the 'defiant' ANC MPs would face disciplinary repercussions from the party - and they have already been told this.

They will for certain be disciplined by the ANC , lose their seats in Parliament and ANC membership - they will be told this before hand.

She believes that Zuma's faction could be strengthened after purging the party of the MPs who are brave enough to "go rogue".

After which, the another "Zuma candidate" could be appointed in the President's place, making the country's political climate worse.

The Zuma-faction's hand is now even stronger than it was before... As I warned, there are many more possibilities that are even worse than Zuma.
