[WATCH] Civil rights activist describes how ANC members threatened organisers

Human rights NGO Section27's director Mark Heywood gives a shaken account after a group he says identified themselves as ANC members, stormed their tented camp in Pretoria's Church Square, where they have been setting up ahead of Friday's peaceful march.

The march has been organised for citizens to call for President Zuma to step down and oppose state capture.

We have been here since Monday, we have been peaceful since Monday. We have not caused any disruption..

Mark Heywood, Section27

This evening while organisers were in the middle of a planning meeting, he says a group of ten to fifteen people who identified with the ANC arrived and began intimidating the group and threatening violence.

He says, one person, was identified as an ANC councillor while others he believes were from the ANC Youth League.

They began threatening violence against the people inside the tent.

Mark Heywood, Section27

They called the group counter-revolutionaries and targeted Heywood in particular, destroyed banners and threatened to return in larger numbers.

Heywood says during this altercation, police were absent, even after he had spent hours meeting with them earlier to plan the march.

He says they will not be intimidated and urges citizens of South Africa to attend the march on Friday as planned.

We appeal to people to join this camp and this is more reason to come here in numbers on Friday to show our unhappiness with the slide this country is going into...and I guarantee we will make sure people are safe.
